With shelter-in-place orders keeping us at home, we can turn to exercise - a proven and powerful tool to help deal with stress and anxiety. Exercise science shows that we no longer need to define exercise only as a long, muscle-tortured experience in a crowded gym. “Exercise snacks” are short periods of movement that occur a few times each day. They can take place almost anywhere and can use whatever tools are on hand. Ten minutes of exercise, three times a day adds up to 30 minutes of mind-clearing and body-relaxing fitness. You can get a lot done and have an effective workout in a short period of time by moving your arms and legs together, using multiple muscle groups to create an intense and time efficient workout.
Now is a great time to start exercising at home. With home workouts there are no gym membership dues, no wasted travel time, no crowded gym floors nor peer pressure to perform. The key to a good home workout is to be creative. Even if you don’t have standard exercise equipment there are many other options. Your body weight, cans of food, bags of food, water bottles, stones, bricks, logs; anything that can be held and has weight can be used. Stairs, chairs, beds, tables, and benches can also be incorporated. You don’t need a lot of space, just enough to move around a bit (about 3 feet).
Once you start to move a little each day, you will feel better and you will be motivated to keep going. The key is to get started and even if it is only five minutes a day, that will get you on the road to good health!
